VDK campknife???
I need help identifying this knife. It's stamped 'VDK' and that stamps looks pretty much like the trademark of a knife'maker called 'Vlad' but the style is so different that I'm just not sure. 'VDK' is the only information I have. There's no additional info on the blade.

Most ferro rods (fire steels) come with a striker and for a reason. Is using the spine of your knife all the time not messing with the heat threat and temper of the blade?
Challenging DC about the 5 C's

Many people like the 5 C's and some even live by it. But there's a very important C missing. In the video I call it a 'calling device' but Reallybigmonkey1 came up with the name 'communication' and that kinda sums it up. It can be a whistle, signal mirror or even a cell phone but being able to draw attention from rescuers is way more important than having cordage. The numbers 6 to 10 are for th...

    Do not drug the blade over the stone, stop the sharpening motion before the stone ends.Also do not apply much pressure with your hand.also, the closer to the last passes, lighten the pressure more and more, and the last passes, just let the weight of the knife, be the only pressure applied and only one pass per side. We only do more passe per side, on the low grit stones, when we remove steel to establish an edge bevel. When we are at the mid and final stage grits, we always do one each side, and always we do exactly the same on both sides.Finish by stropping on news paper, not leather. You might dull the edge,. if you strop on leather,

      Thx for the nice comment. Planning on visiting Thailand so I had a look at the knife laws. It basically says you can't have a knife or anything else that a weapon or can be used as a weapon. That's basically saying nothing. I did read that a small SAK is socially acceptable to carry. Non locking, not one hand opening. But I plan to go into nature also. So I might take a simple Mora 546 and if they take it away it's almost no money lost. Or my Svord Peasant with pink handle scales. I'd rather have customs and police think I'm gay and let me keep the knife than think I'm 'Rambo' and take the knife away.

      Hultafors is not available everywhere. Or more expensive. Here in my country it is available and cheaper than a Mora. Been using a Hultafors GK since 2011 and the thing won't break. Of course Mora is a great brand too and probably more available. I have lots of other knives, machetes and hatchets. But I make the difference between wat you NEED and what you WANT. When it comes to saws you will also want one saw that does it all. That's the Bahco Laplander or saws like this. Fresh wood, dead wood, bones, it doesn't matter. It will bend before it breaks. So when I decide to bring a saw it's the Bahco Laplander for sure. Yes, we are on the same page ;)

      @@stevanoutdoor thanks my friend, appreciate the info here. I will have to look and see about a hultafor here in my area. About axes and saws, I like them and use them but in general a Swiss Army knife and fixed blade does most of what I need, and I try to limit ax use in the back country if I can! If you have an accident far away, it’s so dangerous.

    Nice collection, you're right, nowadays the old model KL knives, whether they're Amefa or Victorinox, are collectors' pieces and too expensive for every day carry. I was in the British Army in the late 80s/early 90s. We didn't get any knife issued, just the linemen in our (Signals) Regiment got them, the one like you showed but with a marlinspike. I actually bought an old model German Army Victorinox and carried that.

    it's not a hitch because it's easy to untie, it's hitch because it ties a rope to a thing. Constrictor "knot". is a misnomer because it's actually a hitch in that it ties a rope to a thing.

  • @winstonsmiths2449
    @winstonsmiths2449 2 года назад

    Great video and answered my question on what the difference is and more importantly, WHY each is used over the other. Other than stopper knots, I have never had too much trouble or had to cut a rope to untie it. Correction: I use taut-line hitches to hold up my sun shades. After weeks or months in the sun and rain, I either have to wet the knot to get some lubrication on the rope to open it up for untying, or simply cut it. I hope I am not suffering the Dunning-Kruger affect here! I have never had to use a knot under critical conditions such as climbing, that is why I watch videos from experienced climbers. The climbers that are wrongly using their knots...are not on YT or sadly not on that long.

    • @stevanoutdoor
      @stevanoutdoor 3 года назад

      The can I used is some 10,2 cm diagonal and some 11,7 cm high. They use them a lot here for canned vegetables and fruits with some 800 to 825 gram content. I use the one without the white inside coating but I guess you could also burn that off first. After you remove top and bottom with a can opener (I use the bottom on the bottom of the stove to prevent burning the soil) Then all you need is strong scissors and a drill. (Since the video I drilled the holes in the can one size bigger for an easier fit.) Once you have cut the can open lengthwise you can basically bend the curve into shape to match your stove.

    Dear Steven, We have talked a long time ago I really hope you doing well in these crazy days. I just discovered the latest DAK dutch army knife from Victorinox and I would be very intresting for your opinion. I know you prefer the classic alox model so do I. I am lucky enough to own an original standard issue Wenger soldat knife. Really good design. I know you have been trained and issued in the dutch army so It would be intresting if you could share your opinion. This new DAK owns two blades. One is similar like a gutting blade but also can be used as emergency blade. Do you think this is necessary in military? I dont know. Best regards, Lev

    • @stevanoutdoor
      @stevanoutdoor 3 года назад

      Dear Lev, Good to hear from you. I'm doing ok but this pandemic does make it harder for business. Trip to Brazil got cancelled and trip to Argentina postponed. I hope all is well with you? The model you talk about (I think) was introduced in 2010. You have to keep in mind that this is the only edged tool issued by the Dutch Military (besides maybe some Special Forces that get issued a fixed blade as well and I know for a fact that many soldiers also carry a multitool with pliers). But basically it should be a one tool option. I think having the partially serrated main blade and an extra serrated curved blade is redundant. The serrated curved safety gutting and rescue blade does make sense in some branches of the military for instance medics and engineers who work with fabric and rope a lot. I think for some military branches a wood saw would be better. But of course it's also all about budget. I also think they should replace the scales with alox. I did have these plastic scales break on me during normal work. So that's my opinion. I'll keep my old model but always combine it with a fixed blade (even when I was in the military). Cheers, Steve

The instruction was to heat it up so when these guys complained the first question was if they did heat it up to let the preservatives vaporize. They now have more modern MRE's of course.
